Hi, the reason for many keys for Indian darbies or keys for screw key locks to have the thread appear to be offset is because the key is not threaded with a 'tap' nor is the key solid to begin within.

Many keys for these cuffs and similar locks are actually sheet steel rolled to produce a tube and a coil of wire is inserted to become the thread.

If the sheet steel overlaps, it will produce a hole offset from the centre. Both the coil and the tube are brazed (brass welded) together.
